On Being AWKWARD
One of her greatest accomplishments to date is a witty women’s blog called AWKWARD, which she co-founded with good friend and colleague Erin E. The two aspiring mavens met last summer while they were both interning in NYC. As media pros, they know the industry landscape like the backs of their hands, and there just wasn’t anything out there that resonated with them. They are young and intelligent women, and they celebrate their imperfections. What magazine wants to tell you about that?
“There’s this empty hole in the media for women in their 20s, I woud even say online, too,” Sammy says. Referring to the self-help cover lines that are always telling us how to improve our ‘something’ or increase our ‘other,’ Sammy says, “The media tells you you’re not happy. They tell you how you feel.”
She adds, “You read men’s magazines, and they don’t tell them anything. They just assume they’re happy and confident.”
Thus, AWKWARD was born. A blog created just for us twenty-something women who don’t mind our love handles, the fact that we occasionally snort when we laugh and we never really grew out of that ‘awkward phase.’ All because, as the blog’s tagline reads, ‘Perfection is Boring.’
“It’s a platform for you to be yourself,” she says. Read more here!
