I’ve never personally felt the strains of racism, and in my heart I know I never will. I have always had the privilege, and now according to Pond’s “White Beauty” commercials airing in India [see below] the beauty of a Caucasian female of European descent.
My stomach is in knots watching these commercials. Two prominent beauty companies are supporting the idea that white is better, and they are doing so in the most manipulative, sickening fashion.
And the most disgusting part - and I’m almost frightened to say this - is that these are not products advertised for African American women, but for Indian women who are clearly affected by European standards of beauty. These are ideas of White Power that have transcended the issues of a once (and arguably in many ways, still) racially divided America and created an entirely new monster in the East.
There is nothing AWKWARD about not being white. Or being black. Or yellow. Or red. Or brown.
What’s AWKWARD is that I thought White Power had died from the mainstream. I thought that American beauty companies like Pond’s had the decency to reject these dramatized advertising practices. I thought that women weren’t targeted in this manipulative fashion as illustrated by this video - influenced to strip their skin of its beauty because the man chose the “white” girl over her beautiful brown skin.
I thought wrong.
