Tuesday 7:20 AM
I had to go into work early, so my surroundings were totally new and I had a whole different set of people to analyze on my morning commute.
As I walked down the subway platform a really cute guy caught me eye. He was at the end of the platform wearing nice work clothes and skater shoes…one of my biggest downfalls. I’m a wimp, so I didn’t walk towards him, plus we both had our headphones on. Headphones make for wordless encounters, at best.
When I switched trains I saw him again, only this time as we passed he was staring back. Alas, I’m incapable of conversation with new boys, so after briefly locking eyes and flashing a smile at the hottie, I walked on.
Thursday 4:45 PM
Back on my regular schedule, I’m boarding the subway after work, and I see a cute guy getting into the same car as me, a quick glance at the floor confirms my suspicions…skater shoe & dress clothes boy. We end up entering through the same door, and proceed to brace ourselves on the same germ-infested pole for the 15-minute ride back to campus.
Again, the headphones made conversation impossible [any suggestions for what to do in this situation in the future would be appreciated.] I had to make sure I didn’t stare at him for the duration of our journey, since usually I don’t get self-conscious about staring aimlessly around the subway car. I wasn’t sure if he recognized me, but I certainly felt AWKWARD.
Thursday 8:06 PM
I’m relaying the story to my co-workers after post-work Thai food, asking for their opinion on writing a Missed Connection to find my boy. My friend Allison asked for a description:
Me: He was wearing skater shoes, dress clothes, no tie, sleeves rolled up, and had really nice eyes.
Allison: I think I know who you’re talking about! It might be my friend *Brad.
I thought nothing of it, considering my description could have described tons of guys.
Saturday 7:33 PM
Brad comes up in conversation, so I made Allison show me his picture on Facebook. It was my subway boy! He’s good friends with Allison’s best guy friends, and she hung out with him the night before. They’re legit friends! What are the odds?
After getting over the initial shock of the situation, my thoughts:
Apparently I have no need for a Missed Connection, and she’ll invite me to hang out with her group of friends at some point when Brad is around so I can talk to him without annoying interference of our iPods. Hopefully our next encounter won’t be as AWKWARD. Wish me luck.
*Name changed in case I end up actually having a shot with this guy and he Googles himself.
