According to a recent Newsweek article, “The Real Law of Attraction,” looks like that old adage a woman is only after a guys’ money, and a guy is only after a woman’s looks, is totally wrong. Women are all about the looks, too.
Northwestern University social psychologists Eli Finkel and Paul Eastwick invited 163 undergraduate college students to a two-hour speed-dating event. Each student had to first say what they were looking for, then spend four minutes with a potential mate. Later they viewed their picture on a computer and noted whether or not they’d ask them back for another date.
Though initially women said they were less interested in looks, both genders inevitably place the greatest value on physical attractiveness, followed by personality and then earning potential.
Our emotions are mixed: we’re happy to shed the gold digger stereotype, but embarrassed to admit we’re just as shallow as men.
