AWKWARD: Because Perfection is Boring: Dating columns bring the boys back

  1. Dating columns bring the boys back

So I just started to write a relationship column for my school newspaper and I was warned from day one that I would have to delve into my personal life in order to make the column effective. Totally fine. My life is an open book and those who know me know I’m notorious for dating and capturing many guys’ hearts on campus and beyond. I’ve never been ashamed of this or felt the need to explain myself so I simply live my life and share my stories.

Being that I was crazy excited for the column to begin I told everyone about it, and by everyone I mean everyone including ex’s, hook-ups, crushes, etc.

When my first column published I talked about how I had dated a million people and found it hard to continue my dating without thinking about those past beaus. The remedy I gave was to write all the ex’s away by jotting down why you enjoyed them, why you gave them up and why you should never see them again.

I realized this column would stir some emotions from readers, and the following day I definitely got a taste. I was contacted by 3 ex boyfriends who, before complimenting me on the column, asked “Was I one of those guys?” I gasped and thought to myself, “Wow they actually read it and now all of the sudden care.” This turned into hours of conversation with each of the guys where we delved into every minute detail of why we broke up, hurt each other and don’t talk anymore. Ugh!

Even though I hadn’t spoken to these guys for months or even years, they were still stressing about how I felt about them. While such an awkward experience, I sighed with relief knowing that all this time I spent stressing, thinking and mentally killing myself over these ex’s was not time spent alone.

As women we always think we are thinking too much or overanalyzing and being emotional. In reality, those guys are sitting out there doing the same exact thing, only more discretely. Well, at least my ex’s are.
