I initially wanted to include this song for your listening pleasure because I just thought it was AWKWARD. Who walks 500 miles? Seriously.
But then, upon listening to the lyrics- and I mean really listening and interpreting them for what they mean- I realized that this song is not a love song. It’s a song about surrendering to the alpha female.
The chorus, “surrender // surrender // surrender” is enough evidence to support this assertion. Not only that, but “I will walk 500 miles… to fall down at your door” shows the male as being willing to bring physical pain on himself for the sake of his female love. He will literally walk to his death in order to reach her- because she has control over his heart, emotions and his practical state of mind.
He also says he will “give every penny to her” and will be “lonely without her.” He says it almost to satisfy her— not as if he actually means it. He really says it with a sort of bitterness instead.
He can’t get drunk with his boys- he must get drunk with her. And he will “haver” next to her- a word he claims not to even know the definition of.
Hav´er (hăv´ẽr)
n.1.A possessor; a holder.v. i.1.To maunder; to talk foolishly; to chatter.
So does “haver” mean in this sense that she, the alpha female, is a “possessor” of him? Or does it mean that she dumbs him down to “talk foolishly and chatter?”
Mr. Proclaimer, you have been roped in by an alpha female. Now go walk your 500 miles. You better love every step.
“I Would Walk 500 Miles”
[by the Proclaimers]
When I wake up, yeah I know Im gonna be,
I’m gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out yeah I know Im gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who goes along with you
And If I get drunk, yes I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver whatever that means
I’m gonna be the man who’s havering to you
But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
To be the man who walked 1,000 miles
To fall down at your door
When I’m working yeah I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who’s working hard for you
And when the money, comes in for the work I do
I’ll pass almost every penny on to you
When I come home yeah I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old well I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who’s growing old with you
And I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
To be the man who walked 1,000 miles
To fall down at your door
Surrender
Surrender
When I’m lonely yes I know I’m gonna be

I’m gonna be the man that gets drunk next to you
And if I haver, whatever the fuck that means
I’m gonna be the man who havers next you
And I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
To be the man who walked 1,000 miles
To fall down at your door
Surrender
