AWKWARD: Because Perfection is Boring: If it hurts, it's worth it

  1. If it hurts, it’s worth it

There is something to be said about having a goal that is difficult to achieve. If something is easy to achieve, it is not a goal, but a task. Something that regardless of your effort, will get done eventually.

But that which is difficult is not just a task. It is a goal. It is something to strive for, to do everything you can to reach. You hope that something you do— anything you do— will work. Reaching your goal is a bit of a crapshoot. You never know what will get you there, and it’s not a guarantee that your effort will reep results.

It is only a guarantee that your efforts may hurt. Your efforts may hurt physically, emotionally, or a little bit of a both. Because when we do not achieve the idea of our goal as we expect, our egos are let down, and we hurt. When we do not achieve the actual goal, we hurt physically following the mental strain invoked to fulfill that goal.

Tasks are monotonous. There is no fulfilling joy in going to class, or making your bed, or picking up groceries.

But there is fulfillment in the goal of going to class so that you can volunteer your opinions, decorating your room Victorian theme using only vintage furniture, and picking up groceries to make Thanksgiving meal for your family.

Often, goals hurt. They hurt because we are uncertain that we will ever reach them.

But like a sports enthusiast would say, there is no gain without pain.

So if pain will keep me feeling alive, then bring it.
