Esquire has a feature called “What I’ve Learned” where celebrities/notable men & women share their tidbits of life wisdom to readers which each weigh personal and universal value, but are encouraged to be taken with a grain of salt.
Last weekend, I spoke twice at my Alma Mater, Temple University. First, I spoke on my role with Hearst Digital Media as a web assistant and producer for Esquire.com. Later that day, I spoke on a panel for the Temple University chapter of ED2010 titled “What College Never Taught Me.”
The following is a handout I produced - mimicing the style of Esquire’s “What I Learned” - and given to the attendees of “What College Never Taught Me.”
Take it with a grain of salt, or forever hold your peace.

» Surround yourself with as many friends as possible. In the moments you forget yourself, they’re always there to remind you who you are and who you want to be.
» College taught me how to dream, and real life is teaching me how to realize that dream.
» Make as many mistakes as you can in college. You don’t learn from correct answers.
» Relationships, more than skills, will get you where you want to be in your career.
» Start a savings account now.
» College has two purposes. 1. To teach you how to learn quickly so that once you graduate, you can learn a new job fast enough so that you can 2. Pay rent, slowly chisel away school loans, and buy PBR. Depending on the person, not necessarily in that order.
» Carpe Diem does not have one definition. Define your own version of Seize the Day, write it on a piece of paper in 100 words or less, and keep it in your wallet. Pull out and re-read/re-write/re-dream when necessary.
» Be your own best friend. When your best friend makes a mistake, you’d never criticize them like you probably would yourself.
» You can’t fall in love without learning to love yourself first.
» Tell a little white lie everyday. It’s called stress management.
» Focus is the hardest form of self discipline, but not necessarily the best for the creative soul.
» You won’t know where you want to be in your career until you find yourself there.
» Dreams don’t change. They evolve.
