You and me both, Chuck
“Diane ended a long-term relationship and was very sad, and I found her sadness electrically attractive. I tend to equate sadness with intelligence. “ -From “Killing Yourself to Live”

just 'cause you feel it doesnt mean it's there
According to Chuck Klosterman, according to Thom Yorke, intense writer’s block prevented him from writing coherant lyrics for the Kid A album, so he wrote a bunch of nonsense on slips of paper and drew them out of a hat. Bam—you’ve got a song. But after the aformentioned block, he wrote the song “There There” on the album Hail to the Theif, and the lyrics make...

We’re all a bunch of dirty cheaters. “The lifetime infidelity for men increased to 28 percent, up from 20 percent in ’91. For women, the increase was more dramatic: 15 percent, up from 5 percent 17 years ago.”

Sitting at my bleak day job, I’m thinking maybe this is as good as it gets. At least I have a day job I can call bleak. I’m not sure if I feel better now…

The etymology of the term "dive bar"
The first documented use of the phrase appeared in the New York Herald in July 1871, and according to the Oxford English Dictionary, the colloquial use of the word dive to describe a “drinking den” or “other disreputable place of resort” comes from the fact that these types of establishments were originally housed in cellars or basements, into which “frequenters may ‘dive’ without observation.”

“Why do you want to be a journalist?” This is what my sister asks me on a Sunday afternoon in October. I didn’t know how to answer her. How do I tell my sister in one sentence how it began? I could say it started in elementary school. The first time I witnessed how cruel the world could be; and how much I wanted to change it. I had known Danny for years. By the time I had reached...

Word of the Day for Monday, October 13, 2008 SOBRIQUET \SO-brih-kay; -ket; so-brih-KAY; -KET, noun: A nickname; an assumed name; an epithet Even though Erin’s real name is Erin Hicks, I affectionately call her by her SOBRIQUET: Erin E. The reasoning: I mistakenly thought her last name started with an E, while it was just the first letter of her middle name, Elizabeth. The name was...

When I was in college I lived in the ghetto for four years in an area of Philadelphia where hearing gunshots became as normal as getting all liquored up on a Thursday night. As both of these details have lead many a naïve student down “shit’s creek,” I never ran into any problems. My dad warned me since before I was a freshman at Temple University that I better watch my back on...

I am a label whore, hear me roar.
I don’t subscribe to Vogue or Women’s Wear Daily. I buy clothing from mall chain stores. The most expensive articles of clothing I own are a Lacoste jacket and a pair of 7 for All Mankind jeans. But, at the mere mention of Marc Jacobs, my mind transitions to whenever is mentioned at hand. But why? I was born and raised in Ohio. The Not-Quite-Midwest and Not-Quite-East Coast center of America. Not...

As the election draws nearer, I notice people categorizing themselves more and more. Republican, Democrat, Catholic, Lutheran, cat people, dog people…circle only one from each category, please. I’m not here to talk about Obama or McCain. Or even Palin or Biden. I’m here to talk about how cat people face injustice from the dog people of the world. Even if you don’t like animals, deep down you are...

Bright Eyes lyrics=pure poetry
“When panic grips your body And your heart’s a hummingbird Raven thoughts blacken your mind ‘Til you’re breathing in reverse All your friends and sedatives mean well But make it worse Every reassurance just magnifies the doubt Better find yourself a place to level out” —Bright Eyes, “If the Brakeman Turns My Way”

3 Things I learned from Sarah Palin

Sammy D on what it means to be AWKWARD
On Being AWKWARD One of her greatest accomplishments to date is a witty women’s blog called AWKWARD, which she co-founded with good friend and colleague Erin E. The two aspiring mavens met last summer while they were both interning in NYC. As media pros, they know the industry landscape like the backs of their hands, and there just wasn’t anything out there that resonated with them. They are young...
